Mens First Team Beat Bankers to Close in on Promotion

The mens first team beat Sheffield Bankers 3-2 on Saturday to close in on promotion to the national league. With Wakefield 15 points clear of Sheffield and only 7 games left, Wakefield require only 6 points from there remaining 7 games to guarantee promotion to the national league. The mens 1s have two games at home this weekend as well to claim the six points and clinch promotion very early. Wakefield were no where near their best on Saturday but 2 goals from the leading league scorer Oliver Stoddart and a tap in for Simon Ball gave them the victory. A man of the match performance from Chris Kessie in the net kept Sheffield Bankers at bay.

On Saturday Wakefield will host Leeds Uni at College Grove and on Sunday they will try once again to complete the game against Durham University. Wakefield will hope to come away with 6 points and guarantee that national league place next year. Other results in the league also went in Wakefields favour with both Bowdon and Durham dropping points and Wakefield now sit 5 points clear at the top of the league.

Mens 2s Win First Game of the Season

The mens second team suffered a defeat on Saturday at the hands of Sheffield Bankers 2s but bounced back on Sunday to claim their first victory of the season against Durham City. Wakefield sat on minus 2 points before the weekend began due to administration error which saw an unregistered player play for the second team. By the end of the weekend though they were in positive points and will now look to try get away from bottom of the league. Goals from Chris Wynd, Chad Conlon, and Sam Killoway saw Wakefield beat Durham City 3-1.

There is hope for the second team to avoid relegation as only one team will be relegated from the North East Division 2 league if no northern side is relegated from National League. A few more results like this and it could become a possibility.

Ladies 1s Unfairly Suffer Heavy Defeat

The Ladies first team have been out of action since the end of November due to the weather conditions and the two month indoor break. The team were looking to build on the success of the indoor season by producing the goods against top of the table Beeston. Wakefield ran out 4-3 victors at College Grove early in the season and were looking to emulated that. Wakefield created plenty of chances against Beeston and just failed to put the ball in the back of the net, were as Beeston took advantage of a few simple errors in the Wakefield defensive line to take the three points and win 4-0.

It wasn't a brilliant day for Wakefield as Manager Satnam Khela had to travel home before the game due to illness, Bev Barstow suffered a bruised ankle in the warm-up and had to go to hospital and Rosie Tootell joined her after recieving a cut to the face early in the first half. All this meant a tough Saturday for the first team. There next match will be this Saturday against Springfields, before playing Doncaster on Sunday.
