Why Play Hockey?
We think hockey is great because:
- It is a fast technical game. You can learn the basics quickly, but still be mastering your skills after decades of playing
- It is fun and sociable team sport
- Rolling substitutions help make it a tactical game and one where you can rest during the game, and re-enter the fray revived
- It is played at all ages. You can start at 6 and still be playing, even at international level at 60
- It is played equally by men and women. In addition to mens and ladies sides there are many social and competitive mixed sides. Hockey is a sport that has a mixed international team
- It can be played outdoors or indoors
Why Wakefield?
- As a large club we have 6 mens teams, 6 ladies teams, so we can cater for all abilities
- We have a large and friendly clubhouse
- Our main pitch is located outside our clubhouse and is an international standard water based pitch.
- We have a wide range of ages in a our membership offering a full youth section all the way to veterans hockey
- We have a range of fun social events including a Black Tie Dinner in November, an Awards Dinner at the end of season and many other events.
- Our main fundraiser the Mixed Summer Festival (Summersplash) in June is a fun way to play and socialise.
- With both our 1XIs Ladies in the Investec English Hockey League there are regular opportunities to watch hockey at the highest domestic level.
- With several junior internationals in the club we have a proven track record of developing elite players withour neglecting social players
- With monthly selection meetings you won’t get stuck in a team and will have every opportunity to progress if you want to
I want to Join Now!
To join Wakefield Hockey Club you need to complete a membership form and pay an annual membership fee. We accept playing and non-playing (social) members. Membership entitles you to use all the facilities at the club, attend training and playing in matches. Use of the club and training is included in your membership subscription. Each game you play in will incur an additional match fee to cover pitch, travel and hospitality costs.
If you want to play in one of our performance squads then the selection process is slightly different. These squads are our elite competitive teams who play higher levels of regional hockey or in the English Hockey League. You will need to get involved in pre-season fitness and training sessions and play pre-season games with these squads.
