Boys Hockey U19 Champions!

Wakefield under 19 Boys capped an impressive day in Leeds on a glorious Saturday as they succeeded in becoming the champions for the second year in a row.

Wakefield v Bradford: 2-0

The tournament unfolded with a game against Bradford whos keeper was found in awesome form twice thwating Grainger and Dent in a matter of minutes whilst Moorhouse looked to open his account but blazed over the bar from an acute angle. The Wakefield keeper never in action during the opening game due to the composed display of James, Parker and Stothard in defence, Wakefield soon took the lead which was then doubled as Wood ghosted through to slot in from the top of the D.

Wakefield v Sheffield: 1-0

Two evenly matched sides battled hard to earn the advantage and take maximum points from the game. But a swift short corner routine left the Sheffield defence split open as Cockerill slid home for an early lead. Chase, Grundy and kellogs worked the wings but Wakefield found space hard to come by in a scrappy second game and due to some fine goalkeeping by Richmond it pushed Wakefield on to take the points.

Wakefield v York: 2-0

A rejuvenated Wakefield side played their finest game of the tournament so far against York. The forward line with the ever impressive Ventom and Moorhouse leading a high line allowed O'Neil to stamp his authority on the game backed up by the hard hitting backline of Cockerill and James. Just before the lead Moorhouse latched on first time to a 60 yard aerial from James nearly nicking the paint off the cross bar. Grainger showed some delightful touches but it was to be Chase who against his old club sent a 'tommahawk' blazing past the keeper with a little help from the York defender, this inspired Wakefield further and Kellogs then tour apart the defence time and time again as he first worked with Stothard and then Bottomley before the lead was doubled again by Ventom.

Wakefield v Rotherham: 3-1

Maturity, teamwork, leadership! This game had it all as Wakefield cruised into a 1-0 lead it seemed the floodgates were about to open but Rotherham inspired by a decisions going their way for the next 15minutes struck back with 5 minutes left of the clock! Wakefield were not affected, they rose to the challenge presented and a triple substitution of Grainger, Moorhouse and Wood with instructions still ringing in their ears affected the game instantly and Wakefield scored two in quick succession to leave no one thinking they could affect the game by themselves the work rate and determination by the boys was excellent.

Wakefield v Driffield: 2-1

Richmond made sure Wakefield clung on to this slender lead. Grundy found his touch to continually release the forward line with an excellent display from the young Dent as he teased the Driffield defence with Grainger and Ventom. The narrow lead of one was again help by certain decision making processes but the boys worked well again with Chase and Moorhouse combing again and again but a big thanks to Richmonds heroics!

Wakefield v Leeds University: 1-0

It had all come down to this, both teams on 15points but Wakefield had no fears against an older more experienced University side. This was shown in matter of minutes as Chase and Parker hounded down the quick skilled midfield. Again the rotation of the front four proved fruitful for Wakefield as the clinical finishing continued to work wonders. It was then a University onslaught but Cockerill and James took no prisoners as they continually battled back against everything Leeds came with and then Wakefield exploited the space with quick counter-attacking play by Kellogs and Moorhouse. Eventually time ran out and Leeds out earning Wakefield with a forth clean sheet! Wakefield was crowned champions presented to Captain James O'Neil.

Kind Regards

Tom

With 5 girls representing the club at the National U16 Finals and some on holiday Wakefield's very young team put up an excellent fight on sunday at the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League playoff finals. Although the team was composed mainly of U12s, and U13s, Wakefield battled hard but lost their first game 3 -0 to Doncaster. Coach Tom Smith commended the girls as they improved their performance during the day ,losing 1 -0 to Harrogate and finally drawing 0-0 with Ben Rhydding. For many of the girls it was their first taste of such competitive 11 a-side hockey and Smith congratulated them on their superb performance and the fantastic support of their parents.

U16 Girls National Finals Weekend 10/04/2010

Wakefield U16 girls had a very successful weekend at the National Clubs Finals, held at cannock Hockey Club at the weekend. Originally the National competition, which Wakefield won in 2008 and 2009 was for U15 girls but this season the age group changed meaning that most of last year's winning team were there to challenge for the new U16 Trophy.

In a round- robin competition, Wakefield's first game on Saturday was against Midlands' side Beeston who had not conceded a goal prior to the Finals' weekend. With their high scoring record in this seaon's competition, Wakefield knew that they had the talent to cause their opponents' problems. The first half proved to be hard fought and offered few goal scoring chances. Wakefield weathered some periods of pressure but keeper Megan Roe ensured that no goals were conceded. In defence, Molly Timms and Jo Coughlan proved to be very solid. At half time the game remained scoreless. In the second half, Wakefield upped the pace and after exerting more pressure on the Beeston defence. Daisy Morgan pounced on an error in front of the Beeston goal and opened the scoring. Wakefield missed another good opportunity when Katie Bingle drove into the D but hit the ball straight at the keeper. With the minutes ticking away wakefield appeared to have won the game only to let the advantage slip as,after Megan Roe had made an excellent save at a penalty corner, Beeston managed to put the rebound into the net for a late equaliser. The competition was now wide open.

Wakefield's second game of the day against Taunton Vale proved to be very important. Beeston had beaten Teddington 4 - 0 so Wakefield knew they needed goals. In the first half Wakefield took command very quickly but had to be patient before the first goal came. With only 5 minutes to go to half time Mollie Rawnsley struck home the opening goal. After half time the goals began to come. Morgan's pace proved too much for the Vale defenders as she fired in 3 goals.Wakefield's midfield and forwards made it very difficult for the Vale defence. Abi Sawyer, Alice Graye and Lauren Brooke worked tirelessll to keep the pressure on. Rawnsley scored her second and Wakefield's 5th before Bingle fired home from a penalty corner. With the strong sun Wakefield relied on their whole squad substitutes Lauren Grundy, Rachael Dent, Emily Holmes, Frankie Roberts and Lucy James helped to ensure that Wakefield ended the day at the top of the table with a goal difference of 2.

Sunday morning saw Beeston scramble to a 1 - 0 victory over Taunton Vale, meaning that Wakefield needed one more win to be National Champions. Teddington, who had held Wakefield to a draw in the same final game last season, stood between them and victory.

Wakefield got off to a good start putting pressure on the Southern team from the first whistle and never let them settle. A great team effort, particularly from Abi Sawyer, Lauren brooke and Alice Graye who ran tirelessly opening up play for Bingle, Rawnsley and Morgan, ensured that Wakefield took the lead midway through the first half. Morgan scored another stunning goal to settle the team and 2 minutes later won a penalty stroke when she was impeded whilst shooting for goal. Rawnsley stepped up and scored with confidence. In defence Wakefield once again stood strong. Lucy James provided several good passes down th eleft side whilst Jo Coughlan and Molly timms once again showed their strength and maturity. Roe made a couple of excellent saves as Teddington tried to pull the game back but at the other end Alice Graye was rewarded for her efforts when she tipped in a Bingle strike from a penalty corner. Teddington scored a consolation goal with a lucky deflection towards th eend of the game but could not stop Wakefield taking the National title for a 3rd consecutive year. They are the first team to do this since the round -robin format has been introduced.
For 7 of the girls, it was their 3rd winners medal- Jo Coughlan, Molly Timms, Mollie Rawnsley, Lucy Stevenson, Katie Bingle ( Captain), Alice Graye and Daisy Morgan. 8 others won their 2nd medal and Frankie Roberts, making her debut at this level won her first.

An excellent team performance brought the trophy home to Wakefield. Daisy Morgan was the tournament's top goal scorer with 5 and Mollie Rawnsley second with 3 goals. Many thanks to the strong band of friends and family who have supported the girls along the way and to coach norman Hughes for masterminding the campaign.

U10 Girls Tournament Pocklington 28/03/2010

Pocklington, York, 28 March 2010

Wakefield Hockey Club fielded four U10 teams in the final Yorkshire Youth Hockey League outing of the season - the highlight being the success of Wakefield's A Team in achieving the runners up spot in the Yorkshire League. The team didn't lose a game and narrowly missed out on becoming outright winners. Poppy McDermott (3), Tilly Morgan and A-Team Player of the Tournament Antonia Liley (2) scored the goals, with Holly Robinson, Gwyneth Wallis, Rebecca North and Maddie Wilstrop, providing the quality and defensive wall to withstand most attacks.

Wakefield's B Team had a successful outing, securing promotion to the top league thanks to goals from B-Team Player of the Tournament Maddie Scott (2), ably supported by Lucy Baker (2) and a strong defensive showing from Rebecca Marsden.

Wakefield HC also fielded a 4th Team for the first time in the Club's history, and this proved to be a great success with them conceding only 4 goals in the tournament. They won their final game, thanks to a goal from Wakefield C/D debutant and Player of the Tournament Ellie Hague. The development squads for Wakefield C and D have been a massive success this year with girls aged 6 years upwards having lots of fun and getting used to tournament hockey. Thanks to all the parents and supporters involved!

In the second half Wakefield began well, playing with confidence and had several scoring chances. Against the run of play Wanderers took advantage of a defensive error to equalise. Minutes later they added a second. Wakefield did everything they could but were unable to find the goal. Happily this result was not significant as their league survival was already guaranteed.

Excellent defending from Louise Whiteley and Sophie Metcalfe together with keeper Megan Roe kept the home side at bay until the dying minutes of the first half. Helen Evans, Jasmine Kerry and Alice Graye worked tirelessly in midfield defending and setting up attacks for Hannah Field and Isla Mitchell. Eventually Kerry pulled a goal back but Syngenta added 2 more .An excellent team effort from Wakefield wasn't reflected by the score.
