Wakefield Ladies 1s travelled to Pendle Forest on Saturday for their second match in the Investec North Conference National Hockey League. On a flat sandy pitch in the hills of Lancashire, Wakefield struggled initially against a well drilled, strong and physical Pendle side, finding themselves 0-2 down after 19 minutes. Undaunted they responded well with Leah Davis driving the baseline to find Julia Butterworth who drilled the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the Pendle goal on 28 minutes. Wakefield finished the half the stronger side, going in at half-time 1-2. The game then turned on a series of unfortunate events in the second half, starting with an head injury to Wakefield’s Captain Lauren Grundy that took her out of the game. Wakefield then lost possession in attack, getting caught on the counter to concede 1-3 and suffered a number of cards as the game deteriorated in the final quarter with Pendle eventually running out 5-1 winners. The overall scoreline would have been far more without the superb keeping of player of the match, Becky Hague, who thwarted the Pendle attack time and time again throughout the game. Onwards to next week and our first home fixture of the season vs Alderley Edge HC.
